Animal manures contain phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium but large quantities are required to provide sufficient nutrients for vegetables. Animal manures need to be spread 2-3inches in height and then dug in to topsoil. Where manure is unavailable, water-soluble fertilizer mixtures provide the nutrients required.

Organic by-products of animals include bone dust, bone meal and blood and bone. These contain more nitrogen and phosphorus than animal manure but have no potassium. They are less bulky than animal manures as they don’t contain fibrous material. They should be spread 4 – 8 ounces per 10 square feet and dug into the topsoil. Blood and bone is popular as it contains a mixture of fertilizers and releases them slowly.

Organic by-products of plants include cotton, castor and linseed meal but they are popular stock feed and not always available. These vegetable garden fertilizers are concentrated and contain more nitrogen than animal manure but the same phosphorus and potassium. They are applied in the same way as animal by-products.

Green manuring involves planting crops like wheat, barley, oats or legume crops in beds not in use (generally in fall and winter) and then tilling these crops into the soil to fertilize it. Crops need to be watered and sometime flattened before tilling. Keep the soil damp, not wet and till again after 3 weeks. Organic matter takes nearly a month to decompose and provides cheap organic vegetable garden fertilizer.

Garden compost is the least expensive source of organic vegetable garden fertilizer. It is an easy way to re-cycle waste and kitchen scraps. All plant material can be composted except wood shavings or tough leaves from conifers. Don’t include weeds or diseased plants. Composting is just a way to get organic matter to break down. It requires enough moisture, aeration, a pH near neutral and some complete fertilizer. This provides an ideal climate for microorganisms like bacteria and fungi to multiply and begin to break down any matter in the compost bin.

This disease is caused by an organism that attacks and destroys the root system of your plants. The roots will look swollen, have lumps and look wilted.

If not caught early and handled properly the disease could release spores that could spread to the rest of the soil. It can attach itself to the soles of your shoes and any manure fertilizer you might use.

Here is how you can handle and control Clubroot long before it ever steps foot into your home vegetable garden.

For starters choose a species of plant seed that has been engineered to resist Clubroot. This will go a long way in helping to prevent the disease from getting into your soil in the first place.

If your garden has been infected with Clubroot, do not use any type of animal manure as fertilizer for at least 3 seasons. The Clubroot organism can attach itself to manure and spread, defeating the whole purpose of fertilizing in the first place. Instead use organic compost made from grass clippings, leaves and food scraps. If you don’t have a compost pile, now would be a great time to start one.

Take a pH sample of your soil and get the level to around 7.2. This can be done easily by adding compost, calcium or ground up limestone depending on where your pH level currently sits. You can purchase a home soil test kit at any garden center for less than ten dollars. Most tests also will tell you’re the best options for getting the pH level to the value that you desire.
